Starbucks Who?

I am personally not a creature of habit in the sense that I love to try new things, and I do get burnt out very easily. I am always looking to try new recipes, new workouts, and visit new places, but there is one aspect of my life that is a constant that I will NEVER turn my back on. That is my beloved morning cup of coffee. Call me a caffeine addict but truly I look forward to the ritual aspect of it, not so much the energy of caffeine rush. I go to bed excited for my cup of coffee in the morning and that thought alone makes me happy.

Although caffeine gets a bad rap for its afternoon crash and being harsh on your adrenals which can increase anxiety, there are ways to decrease the jitteriness and the negative affects you might feel from caffeine. Let it be known that I am not downing a full pot of coffee in the morning, or consuming 200mg of caffeine in a chemical energy drink. But if YOU are and you feel as though you want to decrease your  caffeine consumption, keep reading and stay open to incorporating new habits that will increase energy without the afternoon crash.

A really really simple way to avoid an afternoon crash or the initial feeling of jitteriness in the morning is to skip the sugary syrups and sweeteners. I know I know, a caramel macchiato is delicious but that’s because it is more like dessert than an energy boost. What you most likely feel after drinking a sugar-loaded latte is a sugar rush and not energy from the caffeine. A sugar rush basically guarantees that afternoon slump that you feel after lunchtime, nor does it do any good for your mood, energy, and anxiousness. It might be a scary thought to let go of your sweet morning drink, especially when you look forward to it, but I PROMISE there are ways to fulfill that craving without refined sugars and additives.

Coconut sugar, honey, agave, or even maple syrup will most definitely sweeten up for morning coffee NATURALLY. Although these alternatives are still sugar, they are not refined which means you are getting them in their most natural form. Refined sugars are heavily processed because the sources are stripped down of all their nutrients until they become nothing but pure sugar. Not to mention the standard syrups you will find at drive-thru’s and other coffee shops are made of high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, sweeteners, and colors. If you can eliminate most of the additives and just stick to natural sweeteners, your body will thank you.

Along with avoiding ultra processed sugars first thing in the morning, you can elevate your morning cup of joe with some supplements and protein. As I mentioned before, caffeine already affects your adrenals which can cause heightened stress or anxiety. So when you are drinking coffee or consume any sort of caffeine on an empty stomach, you are more likely to feel jittery and the best way to avoid that is to pair your coffee with some protein. I know it is hard to eat first thing in the morning because oftentimes you aren’t hungry, I get it because I know the first and only thing I have on my mind after waking up is my cup of coffee. But I have found that adding a scoop of pure collagen peptides or a scoop of a superfood creamer packed with mushrooms and coconut oil powder for brain function, provides the perfect amount of protein and healthy fats to complement the caffeine. The collagen peptides are nice because they are unflavored and dissolve right into a cup of coffee, so if you cherish the bitterness you won’t have to worry about the flavor changing from the collagen. For a superfood creamer, Laird is typically the brand that I reach for because they add a tiny bit of sweetness plus the coconut milk powder for more flavor, so when I am in the mood for a sweeter cup of coffee that is my go to!

There are a million coffee alternatives out there, a million caffeine cleanses, and a million opinions on what caffeine you should consume, when, why, how it will affect you, the list is endless. The few I listed are things that I have found helpful to me when I become aware of the negative effects of caffeine. Since working at the Fit Bar Superfood Cafe for many many years, I have been introduced to a variety of health and wellness insights, along with supplements that I have worked into my daily stack. Lucky for you, we offer natural and refined sugar free coffee additions along with house made syrups, and supplements. The KAVA ROOT Rundown

I truly cannot believe that we are over four months into 2023… where has the time gone!? I know I will be saying the same thing next month, but this year has been flying by. Although the weather is still gloomy and cold most days, we have had a few beautiful days recently that have made me excited for Spring and Summer.

Fit Bar has had a great 2023 so far, we have launched some new products, held not one but TWO community events, and we have so much more in store. Our community events have been such a great opportunity to mingle with other small businesses in the area, and expose our community to delicious superfoods that nourish your bodies. Our first Cultivating Community event was actually last year where the founders introduced a new superfood drink and brought all of the vibes to the West Seattle area. KAVA is something that I have had to do my fair share of research to understand exactly what it is and all of the benefits that it carries. So far this year, our Renton Fit Bar has put on TWO Cultivating Community events to spread the word, and we are not stopping there. Before I get into all of our event details and tell you why you all need to attend, let me define Kava and explain to you why we have brought this new product into our cafes.

KAVA is a root that originates from the Pacific Islands, that is ground up to create a powder that can be used in just about anything. Although the taste is on the bitter side, we have created some recipes that compliment the original flavor while creating a drink that is enjoyable. As of right now a lot of people are unfamiliar with Kava, but there are a plethora of health benefits and we have made it our mission to educate others about this superfood.

  • Produce a feeling of relaxation

  • Elevate mood and enhance contentment

  • Alleviate muscle tension and soreness

  • Reduce stress and anxiety

The list above showcases just a few key benefits of Kava and why we are so excited about it, but I find it to be the most intriguing because of the heightened sense of EUPHORIA that you feel after consuming it. Unlike alcohol, Kava is not a depressant but in fact has the opposite effect and the feelings are almost instant. I think we can all agree that life in general is stressful and the challenges that come to light during our lives test us. So knowing that Kava is a natural source of mood enhancer and stress reducer, makes it that much more appealing to me.

My favorite way to consume Kava is a recipe that is currently unavailable in our cafes, BUT don’t fret, because it will be available very soon. A double serving of KAVA root, along with pineapple, orange juice, coconut milk, and dash of monk fruit, creates an insane mock tail recipe packed with loads of nutritional value and flavor. What IS on our current cafe menu at both of our locations is the KAVA LAVENDER LATTE, and trust me when I tell you that you need this in your life.

A double serving of Kava

A double shot of espresso

Homemade lavender syrup

Vanilla monk fruit syrup

Combined with plant-based milk

I hope after reading this blog you went from never having heard of the word Kava, to knowing a few benefits and wanting to try it. Fit Bar is your local nutrient dealer and we are so excited to be bringing to light this new superfood, in hopes to elevate mood and reduce some stress in the community. As if I haven’t unloaded enough information on you, RENTON FIT BAR CAFE will be hosting our Cultivating Community event the first Friday of every month. Live music, local vendors, delicious Kava mocktails, and much more will be available to everyone monthly. I have had the most amazing time at our last two events - with the help of the enhanced feeling of  euphoria from Kava ;) - and I am so excited that I now have that to look forward to every month. For more information on our community events or if you are intrigued by Kava and want some more information, feel free to stop by Fit Bar Cafe. Real Resolutions

2023 is quickly approaching and per usual, I am not prepared!

The thought of Christmas and the holidays coming to an end until next year makes me a little sad. But I also am hopeful for a great upcoming year, with health, business, and exploration! What also comes along with the new year are resolutions and goals for the upcoming months. The gym is filled to the brim, everyone is starting a new diet, and we are a little bit nicer, which are all great things, but there is one underlying issue with these that we often ignore. The “quick fix” mindset creeps in and overtakes our desire to make healthy and lasting habits, leaving us with temporary results.

Starting the new year off wanting to look and feel better is really a great goal and I think we should all want to put our health first in one way or another. I am the first to say that I have been indulging a lot over the past couple of months during the holidays, so come January 1st I am ready to make a change. My personal goals also include eating better and maintaining exercise, but my number one focus going into the new year is mindset. Mindset represents wanting to create lasting and maintainable habits, and I see that through making decisions which don’t feel like punishment, but do feel rewarding. I wholeheartedly believe that our mindset is what will hold us back, or push us forward to accomplishment, through all aspects of life.

I think that it is safe to say that the general mindset regarding New Year resolutions involves quick and easy fixes, but what if we adapted that mindset to stay along the lines of changing our ways, but without the pressure of wanting it quick and easy? What if our mindset is to create habits that help us daily in our health journey, while giving us results we want? Easier said than done, but the small changes create the biggest impact!

Our mind holds the most power in what we say and think to ourselves, and also what we say to others and how we treat them. If your mindset is clear and positive, the impact you have on yourself and others will be positive. Creating small habits that work towards living the life that you feel good about, not only around health and wellness but also through other aspects of life, is the best way to maintain a positive outlook forever and not just temporarily. My hope for the new year is that we all work towards our goals however that looks like, but honing in on mindset in a way that will progress you even more towards your goals. I also hope that we all spread LOVE throughout the new year and explore new avenues that bring HAPPINESS.
